A letter with news clippings from a Finnish acquaintance was the catalyst for the Finnish News series. These news articles along with their ‘Google’ translations were a fascinating slice of life from an outsider’s perspective.
I re-created the original envelope printed with a translation of his letter along with the newspaper clipping and sewed them into a double pamphlet book. The article folds out of the book, displaying its text in Finnish, a photograph of a protester, and with the Google translations of important sentences. In a pocket in the back, the reader can find a booklet, where the odd translation of the article is printed as an artist book.
Finnish News: NRA is a humorous yet somber visual take on America’s insane obsession with guns.

A letter with news clippings from a Finnish acquaintance was the catalyst for this small edition. I re-created the original envelope printed with a translation of his letter along with the Google translation of the newspaper article, a fascinating slice of life in America from an outsider’s perspective. In Guns, his inaccurate translations are presented on pages of varying sizes, creating overlaps and layering to play with the confusing nature of the read, in direct contrast to its somber content, the American obsession with guns.
