Intervention / Inversion
2013 / At the Jewish National Archive, Budapest
My interest in working with the Jewish National Archive was two-fold: I wanted to make an ‘intervention’: to make & place artwork into the archive storage itself, which would create a dialogue with the objects already there. In doing so, the idea of the exhibition is re-defined. And I wanted to make an ‘inversion’: as objects are integrated into storage, they re-present the function of the Archive as a living document instead of how it is more often seen, as exclusively a repository of the past. I think that the installation succeeded in both actions.
Three groups of books & objects were placed into the Archive. The themes were: The Black & White Torah, The Genisa, and Reflections on the Shoah.
