RE--Tale of Two Cities
Robbin Ami Silverberg & Kim Berman
2022/23: Dobbin Books, NY and African Street Press, Joburg / Varied edition of 10
Media: Drypoint, etching, monoprint, digital, silkscreen, & collage on Dobbin Mill papers with embedded detritus, clothing, plastic mesh & packaging materials
We collaboratively explore the theme of recycling through imagery, text and material: The prints are based on our photographs of the streets of Brooklyn and the Reclaimers informal settlement 'Bekezela’ in Newtown, Johannesburg. The text of the book compares the terminology used in South Africa ('reclaiming') and in the US ('recycling'). The cover is made of the synthetic cloth that is used in Joburg and each copy is a unique relief print. Two compendiums consist of packaging materials from the two countries. Half the edition is boxed with an actual shirt embedded in the inside cover; the other five copies are contained in printed bags made of recycled materials.
"Bekezela is an inspiring community of reclaimers who have formed a settlement under the Carr Street Bridge in Newtown, Johannesburg. Besides their difficult work of recycling, they have established urban food gardens and built a daycare center for their children from found and reclaimed materials.... transforming waste into value."
All together, RE recognizes the value of reclaiming / recycling, and renders the invisible visible.
