Sisters: Five Smooth Stones

Sisters: Five Smooth Stones, 1993 / In collaboration with Louise McCagg / Edition of 5 / Cast pulp, Dobbin Mill papers, magnets, silver leaf, archival inkjet printing

Size: 22” x 22” x 8” (star-shaped)

This book, which is a five-part box structure, consists of two sets of cast paper heads and five texts, each different biblical translations of Samuel 1.17.40. when David meets Goliath and casts forth his river stones to kill the giant.

The heads were life cast from five actual sisters, then cast in alginate to shrink them, and finally pulp cast.

The book requires the viewer to assemble the relation of the heads and texts and in doing so, explore the constellar relationship between siblings. The large magnetized heads can be arranged on the silver-leafed surfaces and held in place by a small magnet inside the box. The smaller heads can be moved around as desired by the reader.

The book can also be manipulated to form several presentations that support different ideas of interpersonal relationships: It can be closed in a star shape with the larger heads of the sisters facing each other; it can be laid out in a row with the sisters' heads facing out to the viewer; finally, or turned outward like a column with the sisters' heads facing away from each other.
